Hand to Plough- Professional Supervision
What We Do
When choosing your supervisor, knowing what type of supervision you will engage in is valuable. At Country Community, we use two approaches:
Person-Centred Conversations
At Country Community, we believe that everyone can be an effective problem-solver and achieve their personal idea of success. In this belief, our supervisors do not analyse and provide solutions; instead, your supervisor serves as a “collaborator” towards your success. The supervisor’s role is to provide an environment where you can be open to your experience and navigate your profession towards success.
In our model, wisdom arises from a courageous conversation about a person’s motivation, role, and current environment. Our supervisors will encourage you to have these conversations. At times, we may have conversations about the everyday aspects of work or your awareness of your own self; other times may require honest self-evaluation. Your supervisor will also be able to guide you through your experiences to grow as a person, and even find your own personal support team within yourself. These conversations can be challenging, but our supervisors will be with you on the journey. Your supervisor is also trained to make sure that your conversations help make things better.
Reflection & Solutions
Reflection entails taking a step back from the immediate moment of an experience to consider what it truly means and then determining how to negotiate future expectations (Moore, 2017). In a supervisory relationship, reflection will develop a foundation of honesty and trust. From there, we foster an environment in which people can think creatively. In general, your supervisor will interact with you regularly. As a team, you and your supervisor will investigate the range of emotions (both good and negative) associated with the challenges that you are managing. You and your supervisor will collaborate to get a sense of where you are and then navigate the next steps.
Everyone’s professional journey is unique, and our goals are very different. Many outside influences affect our pathways. The differences we face are often magnified when we work with people. Country Community Professional Supervision recognises that you (and your success) will be unique. This is why we use reflective, transformative supervision. Reflective supervision is unique from therapy. Reflection focuses on events, emotions, and feelings that are closely related to the work. In understanding our past experiences, we can determine where we are mentally, remind us of our life goals, and what we can do to get back on track.
